GU16 Calypsos Open Season with a Bang
By Manfred Lam
Calypsos opened the GU16 T2 competition with a bang over an overwhelmed Blackheath & Elthamians team under the autumn sun at the City of London Sportsground.
The team’s superiority started with the numerical advantage as the opposition was without a substitute on the bench. Opening minutes saw both sides testing the water but Calypsos established the advantage as soon as the third minute with an early goal after stretching B&E on both flanks. With the whites dominating the middle of park, their percentage of ball interception and retention was notably high to bankroll their high press. Link up plays between the back and front and across the pitch were good to overpower B&E defence fragilities. Signs of fear amongst opposition were evident throughout the match and that gave Calypsos a tailwind to wind up the scoreline.
With Q4 of the match to go, our girls were given a chance to swap their duties between the front and back lines. That didn’t disrupt our flow and goal attempts and scores. The losing B&E’s goalkeeper played well to keep the scoreline lower than otherwise.
This match shows the potential of Calypsos, and individual contributions, in part, have been reflected in the overall score. There was no shortage of endeavour and skill on display. Competitive sport can be a cruel game but perspective is warranted with a grounded expectation for the rest of season: next week another early season high shooters are in town – Bromley & Beckenham at Reed’s School.
Scorers: Henkes (6), Beumer (5), Bryer (2), Winter (2), Gordon-Stewart (1)
Result: 6-0 (HT), 16-0 (FT)
