Surbiton is one of the largest hockey clubs in the country, and one of the oldest in the world. The Club currently boasts an impressive 10 men’s and 9 ladies’ teams, all of which play in leagues at weekends throughout the season. Together with our thriving Colts’ section, this means that the Club provides hockey to over 1200 players.
Surbiton’s men’s section played its first game on 3rd February 1875 against Teddington and remained unbeaten for its first 3 years. Whilst we haven’t been able to keep up that record entirely, our 10 teams are still successfully playing at a wide variety of levels.
Our first team have played in the NOW: Pensions Men’s Hockey League Premier Division since 1999, winning the Premiership in 2000, and have featured in Europe on several occasions. They qualified for the 2013-14 Euro Hockey League, and currently have several Celtic internationals in their squad.
The 1st XI are at the top of a large section, with teams throughout the London, South and Surrey Leagues allowing players of any ambition to enjoy their game at Surbiton. Whilst most of our teams receive internationaly led professional coaching every week, our veterans teams are excused training but continue to play at a high level. We’ve encouraged a number of our junior players’ Dads to play and they play through out the club. The Surbiton Sparticans (aka our 7th XI) took to the pitch for the first time in 2012-13. Currently we are encouraging anyone to play hockey and have set back to hockey sessions.

In less than 25 years, Surbiton’s ladies section has gone from one, new team to 8 teams playing throughout the leagues, from the lower Surrey League Division 10 – B, to the Investec Women’s Hockey League Premier Division, the Ladies’ 1s winning promotion to the top flight for the first time in their history, having won the Surrey Ladies League Premier Division as recently as 2004-05. The Ladies 1s are the current Premier Division champions and Investec Women’s Cup holders.
All our teams feature a combination of young and old as we aim to bring our Colts into Senior hockey and to continue to offer our adult players with the fullest range of playing opportunities. All 9 squads benefit from professionally led training, and we also run ‘(re)learn to play’ programmes, specially for those who have not played for many years and want to come to the game – our 7th XI in particular features a large number of players who have come (back) to the game recently including lots of our junior players’ Mums. Our 8th XI made their debut in the Surrey League Division 10 -B in 2012-13. Our 9th XI play in the Surrey Ladies League Division 10.
