Both Surbiton First Teams Face Tough League Start in 2012-13

Both Surbiton first teams have been handed tough opposition to open their 2012-13 national league campaigns.

When the league starts on 15 September, Surbiton’s men will visit East Grinstead, and Surbiton’s ladies will host Reading, both opponents having finished top of their relative league tables, but having to settle for runners-up in last season’s end of season play-offs.

The men’s first home England Hockey League match will be against Loughborough Students on 23 September.  On 29 September, they make the short trip to Southgate, before successive home games against Canterbury and Cannock on 7 and 13 October.  The men visit Beeston on 21 October, then host Reading on 27 October.  After a week’s break, there’s another short trip to Hampstead and Westminster on 11 November, with Brooklands Manchester University coming to Sugden Road on 17 November.  The return match against East Grinstead takes place on 25 November, before the 2012 schedule concludes with a visit to Loughborough Students on 2 December.

The league resumes on 10 February with a home game versus Southgate, followed by successive visits to Canterbury and Cannock on 17 and 24 February respectively.  March begins with a home game versus Beeston, then a trip to Sonning Lane to play Reading on 10 March, with the return match against Hampstead and Westminster on 16 March, and the final match, a trip to Brooklands Manchester University taking place on 24 March.

Meanwhile the ladies will play their first two away Investec Women’s Hockey League matches in the West Midlands, at Sutton Coldfield on 22 September, and Olton a week later.  Bowdon Hightown come to Sugden Road on 6 October, with the league champions, Leicester visiting on 13 October.  The ladies then continue their West Midlands travel with a visit to the University of Birmingham on 20 October, before travelling West to Bristol to play Clifton on 27 October.  On 10 November, Surbiton host Slough, then travel to Kent for their only Sunday league match, when they play Canterbury on 18 November.  The return match against Olton will take place on 24 November, with the final match of 2012 being held at Bowdon Hightown on 1 December.

On 9 February, the first league match of 2013 is at Sonning Lane against Reading, Sutton Coldfield visit Long Ditton on 16 February, and then the ladies go to Leicester on 23 February.  The ladies have three home games in their last four matches in March, as the University of Birmingham, Clifton, and Canterbury all travel to Sugden Road on 2, 9 and 23 March respectively.  And the last away match is a relatively short journey to Slough on 16 March.
