M1 Give Their Euro-Qualifying Hopes a Boost

A loss or draw away to Loughborough Students on Sunday (26 Feb/2pm) would have put a severe dent in Surbiton’s hopes of a top-five Euroqualifying post-season play-offs position with them lying fourth in the 10-team National Premier Division ahead of Reading (who had a game in hand) and the Students only on goal difference. So when the hosts took the lead from a second-minute penalty corner the omens didn’t look good. However, Ben Tibble equalised on 22 minutes and James Tindall secured a lead on 30 minutes. But it was not until goals from James Ashcroft on 60 minutes and Tindall again on 62 that all three points were safe. So Surbiton remain two points behind third-placed Beeston, but now two ahead of Reading – who drew 1-1 at Cannock – and three ahead of the Students in sixth, who are just one ahead of Hampstead & Westminster.

IWHL Conference East Now Three Horse Race

The race for the Investec Women’s Hockey League Conference East title took an unexpected twist with both of the top two teams losing their unbeaten records on Sunday. Surbiton lost 1-0 at home to seventh placed Chelmsford, but any consolation that St. Albans had also lost by a single goal was tempered by the realisation that the Hertfordshire team’s defeat at third placed Sevenoaks left just four points separating the top three teams.

Surbiton started brightly at Sugden Road, forcing a penalty corner after just 42 seconds, Chloe Strong’s shot deflected past the left post, to gave an indication of the frustration that the home team were to suffer throughout the match.
Nevertheless, with the visitors making frequent unforced errors, and the home players forcing early interceptions, the prospects for victory seemed good. However, Chelmsford’s goalkeeper, Abi Ashford made an early glove save; Sandra Frankland was tackled by Louisa Taylor in the circle; and Vicky … read more

2nd Half Goals Keep L1 on Top at Ipswich

Surbiton Ladies’ patience was rewarded as four second half goals enabled them to come away from Ipswich with a 4-0 win on Saturday afternoon (25 Feb). Surbiton’s defence kept a clean sheet for the fourth successive Investec Women’s Hockey League Conference East match; and Ipswich’s forwards’ woes continued as their failure to score meant that they were kept for bay for the third time since the mid-season break.

However, as Sevenoaks and Oxford Hawks both won last weekend by a single goal; and with Surbiton only able to muster Vicky Bryant’s effort past the left post from Stephanie Addison’s pass before half time, it remained a possibility that Ipswich’s supporters might see their fifth successive match end with a 1-0 scoreline; the East Anglian team having won their last two games of 2011 by the same score.
Surbiton had other ideas, and broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute, Vicky Bryant standing with … read more

M1 Look to do Souble Over Loughborough Students

Having already beaten them 3-0 at home on 6 November, Surbiton Men face a critical trip to play Loughborough Students in the return fixture this Sunday (26 February, 2pm). Despite losing 2-1 at home to second-placed Cannock last Sunday, Surbiton stayed fourth in the elite 10-team National Premier thanks to their hosts’ surprise 2-0 win at fifth-placed Reading. Students had already climbed one place to sixth by winning a postponed fixture the previous day, by 2-0 at home over Hampstead & Westminster to overtake the London side. That left Surbiton, Reading and themselves all on 20 points, separated only by goal difference, but the Berkshire club having a game in hand, so defeat at Loughborough would seriously jeopardise Surbiton’s hopes of qualifying for the end-of-season top five Euro Play-Offs positions.

First of Two League Doubleheaders for L1

Having resumed their league season with a home win against Horsham; and secured a place in the Investec Women’s Cup semi-finals last weekend, Surbiton Ladies can concentrate on their push for promotion with two successive league doubleheader weekends.

On Saturday (25 February), Surbiton travel to Ipswich (Tuddenham Road – 2.30 pm); and then follow up with a rearranged home game against Chelmsford on Sunday (26 February) (Sugden Road – 2pm).
Ipswich accumulated ten points to lead the Investec Women’s Hockey League Conference East table for the first four matches; before a home defeat against Sevenoaks saw the start of a dip in form which has seen them gain only eight points in their last eight matches to leave them fifth in the table. But for Vicky Heptonstall’s late penalty corner equaliser, back in October, Ipswich would have taken all three points away from Sugden Road, but after Christabel Mcwhirter and Annika Broster gave … read more

L1 at Home to Clifton in Cup Semi-Final

Surbiton Ladies’ reward for their 3-0 quarter-final win at Sevenoaks on Sunday, is a home draw against Clifton, currently fourth placed in the Investec Women’s Hockey League Premier Division; in the semi-finals of the Investec Women’s Cup on 25 March.
In sunny, but cloudy conditions, in complete contrast to the previous day’s incessant rain, Surbiton attacked from the start at Holly Bush Lane, and after some promising moves involving Abi Robinson and Vicky Bryant, the visitors took the lead in the ninth minute, Sandra Frankland making sure the ball crossed  the goal-line from close range. Twelve minutes later, Emily Caldwell came off the bench and was perfectly placed at the left post to double Surbiton’s lead.Twelve minutes after half time, Amy Bryant scored, again from open play, to seal Surbiton’s place in the semi-final. Surbiton’s defence kept a clean sheet for the fourth successive league and cup match; and with Isabella Williamson also in command … read more

L1 Cruise into the Investec Women’s Cup Semi-Finals

Surbiton Ladies’ target of reaching the Investec Women’s Cup final for the second successive season is still on track after a comfortable 3-0 quarter-final win at Sevenoaks on Sunday.

M1 Miss out on Chance to Improve Euro-Qualifying Hopes

Cannock revenged their 3-1 defeat in the reverse fixture at Chase Park on 19 November in a game ultimately decided by penalty corners. The visitors scored from their only two, in the sixth and 11th minutes, while Surbiton had to wait until two minutes from time to score from their fifth attempt.

The result didn’t do a lot for the home club’s chances of a top five Euro Play-Offs Qualifying finish. Although they remain fourth following Reading’s surprise 2-0 home defeat by Loughborough Students, the fifth-placed Berkshire club have a game in hand over both them and now sixth-placed Students, who had also won the day before, to leave all three clubs on 20 points, while third-placed Beeston pulled two points ahead of the trio after drawing 3-3 at Beeston.
So M1’s next Sunday (26 February) fixture at Loughborough will be even more critical than it seemed before this weekend’s results.

L1 Beat Horsham To Stay Top of IWHL Conference East

A goal in each half enabled Surbiton Ladies to resume their Investec Women’s Hockey League Conference East season with a 2-0 home win over Horsham, and maintain their two point lead over St. Albans at the top of the table.
In wet conditions, Surbiton dominated the first half, but Horsham’s determined defence made it difficult for the home forwards to create scoring chances.
After Chloe Strong had been thwarted twice from penalty corners, it was third time lucky in the eighteenth minute as a first time strike rebounded off the backboard.   And four minutes before the interval, following Strong’s attacking run, Surbiton were initially awarded a penalty stroke, only for the decision to be amended to a penalty corner following an umpires’ consultation.  Although Surbiton tried to outwit the Horsham defence by manoeuvring the ball to Elen Mumford, Horsham successfully defended.

BIG WEEKEND FOR L1

After being frustrated by the weather for the last two weekends, Surbiton Ladies are poised to resume their campaign to win promotion to the Investec Women’s Hockey League Premier Division; and aim for a second successive appearance in the Investec Women’s Cup Final.
On Saturday (18 Feb), Horsham are the visitors to Sugden Road (push back 2 pm) for a Conference East match. Horsham have experienced mixed fortunes this season, with a very successful indoor season which has seen them promoted to the Maxifuel Super Sixes Division One, after winning first Division Two South, and then Division Two National (with Surbiton runners-up on both occasions).  However, Horsham have struggled with outdoor hockey this season, finding themselves at the bottom of the Investec Women’s Hockey League Conference East with only four points to show from their first ten matches.  Their sole win came from a 2-0 home win over Harleston Magpies in … read more

Fourth Hosts Second at Sugden Road on Sunday – 19th Feb 2pm

Surbiton’s 4-1 home victory over 9th-placed Southgate last Sunday (12 February, 2pm) lifted them up one place to fourth in the elite 10-team National Premier Division, overtaking Reading, whose game was postponed, on goal difference, with both clubs now on 20 points.

But the Elmbridge-based club are still five points behind their this week’s opponents, second-placed Cannock, who notched up a 4-2 home win over leaders East Grinstead to only trail the Sussex club by one point now.
However, Surbiton can take confidence from already having beaten the Staffordshire side 3-1 away in November when with only Richard Alexander of their five England players.
This time all five, again with Cannock keeper James Fair, will miss the game after being out of the country for a fortnight until late this week after spending some days after Saturday’s final test to tie the three-game series against South Africa (a 3-3 draw in which Alexander, … read more

M1’s Olympic Training Five Out in South Africa

Surbiton mid-season preparations are continuing to have to be without their five current England internationals still in the now reduced to 27-strong final GB Olympic training squad, which, including all its injured players, set out this Tuesday (31 January) for South Africa where they have a two-week warm-weather “boot camp” in Stellenbosch, which will include a test series of three capped internationals against their hosts at Cape Town (Friday 3 February) and Stellenbosch (Tuesday 7 and Saturday 11 February), returning home on Wednesday 15 February.

This means that the quintet won’t be around for either of Surbiton’s remaining two mid-season friendlies – at home to Conference East Oxted on Thursday evening (2 February/8pm) and away to Premier Division Reading on Sunday (5 February) afternoon (3pm) – or for the re-opening league fixture at home to Southgate on Sunday week (12 February, 2pm).
